The folks at Gobble Gobble Give are at it again this year with a goal to feed, clothe and give hope to the homeless in Nashville during the Thanksgiving holiday!
This is the second year for Gobble Gobble Give in Nashville, although the charity has been in existence for 17 years in several locations throughout the nation. Last year, volunteers in Nashville alone handed out more than 2,000 hot meals in the area – representing roughly half of the area’s homeless population – and they hope to help even more people this years.
Unique to it’s origins, Gobble Gobble Give treats this drive more like a downhome community potluck, aiming to have most of it’s food prepared and donated by participating individuals. Volunteers will set up at Pirhanas Bar & Grill early morning Thanksgiving Day with food service to those in need beginning at 10 am.
The wonderful thing about Gobble Gobble Give is that the homeless don’t even need to come to the location! In addition to on-site seating, Volunteers will bring family-sized meals directly to recipients in the community, a great option for those who are disabled or don’t have the means to get around town.
Volunteers who help out on Thanksgiving Day may bring a traditional, family-sized hot dish and help to fill the food and care boxes to be distributed. Then, many hop on their bikes, get in their cars, or simply walk down the street to hand out a truly amazing turkey dinner to those in need.
At last year’s Gobble Gobble Give, volunteers lined their cars up to get those Thanksgiving dinners and care boxes out to those in need. This year, the local micro-transportation company, Joyride, has committed its golf carts and drivers to the effort and local establishments, like South restaurant and Tequila Cowboy, have contributed needed supplies; but more volunteers and donations are still needed.
In addition to the hot meals, volunteers donate and deliver warm clothes, toothbrushes, soap, blankets and shoes. “If we get to touch one person’s life today whose down on their luck, it’s going to be worth it,” Montanbeau said in an interview last year. “To give somebody hope. That’s truly humbling and amazing.”
Montanbeau has been involved with Gobble Gobble Give for the past 6 of the Organization’s 17 years. The Thanksgiving charity began in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, when a group of friends decided to host a Thanksgiving pot luck for the homeless in their neighborhood. It has since expanded to New York; Las Vegas; San Francisco; Santa Monica, California; Austin, Texas; Santa Ana, California; and Nashville. Last year, communities combined to serve more than 10,000 homeless in all!
Gobble Gobble Give welcomes any and all additional volunteers and contributions. More information can be found on the charity’s website and Facebook pages.
